Chickasaw High School “Life Changers”

The Life Changers program was never about fixing kids. It was about reminding them of who they were before life convinced them otherwise. Too many of our students arrived carrying labels—troublemaker, at-risk, lost cause—labels given by systems that never took time to learn their names. I understood that weight because I had carried it myself. I knew what it felt like to be counted out before the test even started.

Life Changers was built on one simple belief: proximity changes perspective. When adults show up consistently, listen intentionally, and hold students accountable with love, something begins to shift. Not overnight—but steadily. We talked about choices, responsibility, integrity, and purpose. We talked about consequences, but we also talked about hope. I didn’t promise them easy outcomes; I promised them honesty and presence.

Some days, the victories were small—better attendance, fewer referrals, a student choosing to stay instead of walk away. Other days, the breakthroughs were undeniable—a young man discovering leadership, a young woman reclaiming her voice, a student realizing that their past did not disqualify their future. Watching that transformation reminded me that education, at its best, is discipleship in work boots.

Life Changers changed students—but it also changed me. It reaffirmed that my assignment was never just a title or a position. My calling was to stand in the gap, to use influence as stewardship, and to trust that God could do more through consistency and compassion than I could ever accomplish through control. In God’s classroom, sometimes the lesson isn’t taught from the front of the room—it’s lived, one life at a time.
